Where to take your dog for Sunday lunch in Wandsworth

Sunday lunch deserves a whole afternoon, and in Wandsworth there are plenty of places where the dog can stretch out under the table while you work through a roast. Here are twelve, from Earlsfield and East Putney to the High Street, Wandsworth Common and Battersea Park, sorted by the kind of Sunday you're after.

The roast pubs

Queen Adelaide

If the forecast looks grim, start here. The Queen Adelaide on Putney Bridge Road is fully dog friendly indoors, so rain doesn't spoil anything, and there are cosy corners to settle into. It sits just across the road from Wandsworth Park, so the walk before or after lunch is easy. The kitchen does fresh, seasonal British food and classic Sunday roasts. In better weather, head for the enclosed garden. The pub calls it one of the best beer gardens in Wandsworth, and there's a Burger Shack out there doing burgers, chicken wings and loaded nachos.

Halfway House

Right across from Earlsfield station, the Halfway House is fully dog friendly indoors too, with comfy booths, a conservatory and candlelit corners. Sunday roasts come as beef, half chicken, pork belly or a vegan special, and the kitchen makes a point of backing British farmers and producers. There's a beer garden and outdoor seating if the dog would rather be out in the fresh air.

East Hill

A community pub on Alma Road in East Putney, close to Wandsworth High Street, where Sundays are given over to roasts. The dining spaces are full of light, there's a terrace and an enclosed garden, and the step-free access makes it an easy choice if someone in your group uses a wheelchair or pushchair. Local beers at the bar, and a place that's built for a long lunch.

The Roundhouse

On North Side, right by Wandsworth Common, the Roundhouse serves roasts with all the trimmings and a menu of British seasonal produce. It likens itself to a second living room with colder drinks and better food. Let the dog have a good run on the common first, then take a table on the terrace. If you're bringing a crowd, the Voyager's Room is its space for parties.

The Latchmere

Over in Battersea, on the junction of Latchmere Road and Battersea Bridge Road, the Latchmere does free-range Sunday roasts, responsibly sourced fish and vegan and vegetarian dishes. Outside there's a heated courtyard, an al fresco snug and a sun terrace, so you have a choice whatever the weather. Battersea Park is a few minutes away for the walk, and Theatre503 takes up the first floor.

Three on Wandsworth High Street

The Spread Eagle, the King's Arms and the Ram all sit on a short stretch of Wandsworth High Street, so you can pick the one that suits your Sunday.

Spread Eagle

A proper Victorian Young's pub serving big Sunday roasts and puddings, plus pub classics and fish specials on a menu that changes with the seasons. There's a courtyard and outdoor seating. It also has 21 boutique bedrooms with original features. If friends are coming to stay with their own dog, the dog-friendly rooms come with a dog bed or blanket, a water bowl and treats.

King's Arms

This is the one for a group. Dogs are very welcome in the garden, which has bookable huts (most with TVs), the Mega Hut for up to 25, and the Moatside, a covered, semi-private space for up to 60. Sunday roasts include a kids' roast with colour-in menus, and an outdoor shack does burgers, loaded curly fries and wings. If there's a match on, it's on the big screen.

The Ram

The Ram stands on the site of one of England's oldest pubs and has served Wandsworth since as early as 1533. It keeps the feel of a traditional London pub, and the outdoor seating means the dog can sit right beside you. It's a daytime pub for a dog-friendly Sunday: on Friday and Saturday nights the DJs take over.

Something other than a roast

The Old Sergeant Pub

For a Sunday when nobody fancies a roast, the Old Sergeant on Garratt Lane in Earlsfield serves Indian food, with curries and tandoori dishes, in a Victorian building with modern decor inside. The pub told us itself that dogs are welcome, and there's an enclosed garden and outdoor seating. With sport on eight large HD screens, it suits a Sunday with a match on.

Megan's in the Tonsleys Restaurant (Wandsworth)

On the corner of Old York Road and Tonsley Hill, Megan's is bright and airy, with a conservatory and lots of hanging bamboo lamps, and at 4.7 it's the highest-rated place in this guide. There's outdoor seating, it always keeps space for walk-ins, and the kitchen serves until closing, so a late, lazy lunch works well here.

Flotsam & Jetsam

An independent neighbourhood café on Bellevue Parade, on the edge of Wandsworth Common, for a Sunday that leans towards brunch. Expect all-day brunch, Allpress coffee, fresh juices and freshly baked pastries, cakes and slices. The dog gets its own menu too: homemade pupcakes are £3.50. Go after a lap of the common.

Putt in the park

The odd one out, and a good one. Putt in the Park is a mini golf course with a café in the middle of Battersea Park, off Albert Bridge Road. The venue told us itself that dogs are welcome, and it has treats, puppacinnos, toys, a water bowl and an enclosed garden. Lunch is Neapolitan pizza from a wood-fired oven, with Peroni on draught, wine and cakes, and you can book a table in advance. Afterwards, play a round on a course of slopes, cascades and rockeries.

Making a day of it

Walk first. Wandsworth Park is opposite the Queen Adelaide, Wandsworth Common sits by the Roundhouse and Flotsam & Jetsam, and Battersea Park is around Putt in the Park and close to the Latchmere. A dog that has had a proper run settles much better under the table.

Pack for a long sit. A collapsible water bowl and something to chew will see your dog through the roast, the pudding and the second coffee.

If your dog is nervous, arrive early, before the room fills up, and pick a corner or garden table away from the door. Keep the lead short in a busy pub, especially when there's sport on and the room gets loud.

Book where you can. The King's Arms huts and the tables at Putt in the Park can be booked ahead, while Megan's keeps space for walk-ins.
