The Eagle Farringdon

Dine dog-first at The Eagle Farringdon, London's original gastropub!

The Eagle Farringdon is a pub at 159 Farringdon Road, in Farringdon, Islington. Its own history page calls it Britain's first gastropub, founded in 1991 by restaurant manager Michael Belben and chef David Eyre, who wanted a restaurant but could not afford one. The pub says it celebrated its 30th birthday in January 2021.

The food is cooked to order by a small kitchen: the grill chef chalks up the menu twice daily, five minutes before service, and just two chefs are cooking at any time. Because of that, dishes from the same order may arrive at different times. The first chef, David Eyre, summed up the style as "On holiday all around the Mediterranean". Small tables and barstools around the perimeter are free seating, while larger tables for five to ten people can be booked by phone.

Paws of London lists it as dog-friendly after an editorial check; the dog-policy card below shows where that comes from and when it was last checked. The pub's own site says its closest stations are Farringdon Overground and Underground, and buses 341 and 63 stop directly outside.
