Historic pub split across two buildings, welcoming pups near Charing Cross.

The Ship & Shovell is a traditional pub at 2 Craven Passage in Covent Garden, close to Charing Cross. Its website says it has been part of London's history since the 17th century and is believed to be the only pub in the UK split across two buildings on either side of the street, joined by a shared cellar.

The buildings were built between 1731 and 1733 as two terrace houses and later became two separate pubs, The Ship and The Shovell. A tunnel under Craven Passage joined them into one pub in 1998. A portrait of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell hangs over the fireplace in the larger half.

Drinks include Badger and Outland beers and a range of spirits, and the food menu lists pies, fish and chips and burgers. The pub is run by general manager Lou and her team.

Charing Cross station is a 1 minute walk away, Embankment about 2 minutes and Leicester Square about 6. Trafalgar Square, the Strand and the National Gallery are within easy reach.
