Morpeth Arms

Traditional riverside pub in Westminster with a warm atmosphere.

The Morpeth Arms is a traditional pub at 58 Millbank in Westminster, on the bank of the River Thames and close to Tate Britain. Its website says it was built in 1845 to serve the wardens of the neighbouring Millbank prison.

That history is the pub's main talking point. The original prison cells still lie beneath the building, the prison opened in 1816 and closed in 1890, and a bollard across the road marks where convicts began their journey to Australia. The pub also tells of a ghostly prisoner said to haunt it.

Inside, it serves cask ales, craft beers and a wine list, with seasonal British dishes, homemade pies, fish and chips, scotch eggs and Sunday roasts. It has private hire spaces for birthdays, celebrations and work events, and shows major sporting events including football tournaments.

Pimlico station is a 4 minute walk away and Vauxhall about 7. Nine Elms is around 13 minutes on foot. Paws of London lists it as dog-friendly after an editorial check; the dog-policy card below shows where that comes from and when it was last checked.
