The Green

Britain's first organic pub welcomes dogs to its historic Clerkenwell bar.

The Green is a pub at 29 Clerkenwell Green in Clerkenwell. It describes itself as Britain's first organic pub, certified by the Soil Association since 1998, and as a free house.

The building was the site of a tavern from 1720, and before that was home to Francis Thynne, editor of the works of Chaucer. Since then it has housed offices, restaurants, watch restorers and print studios, and became a pub again about 20 years ago. The drinks list is made up of local independent beers, seasonal cocktails and a natural-led wine list. The pub has a ground-floor bar, generous outdoor seating and a private first-floor events space that can be hired. It is part of the Culpeper Family, a certified B Corporation, and the pub says no reservations are necessary.

Paws of London lists it as dog-friendly after an editorial check; the dog-policy card below shows where that comes from and when it was last checked. The nearest stations are Farringdon (4 minutes on foot), Chancery Lane (8 minutes) and Barbican (8 minutes).
